Finding My Place in the Family God Always Wanted
There are stories we tell the world… and then there are the untold chapters. This is one of mine.
Good afternoon, my beautiful readers.
Welcome back to The Untold Chapter.
Today I completed Day 15 of The Purpose Driven Life, titled “Formed for God’s Family.”
The point to ponder today was:
“I was formed for God’s family.”
The verse to remember was:
"His unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ." — Ephesians 1:5
As I sat and reflected on today’s lesson, one truth kept coming back to me:
God didn’t just create us. He wanted a family.
That thought touched my heart in a way I didn’t expect.
Formed for God’s Family Since the Beginning
One of the first highlights that stood out to me said:
“It was a happy day for Him when He gave us our new lives through the truth of His Word.”
Think about that for a moment.
God was happy when we became part of His family.
So many people grow up wondering if they belong somewhere.
Some people spend years searching for acceptance.
Others spend years trying to earn love.
But God made the decision long ago.
He wanted us.
He chose us.
He adopted us through Jesus Christ.
That is a beautiful reminder that our worth is not based on what we do. Our worth comes from who we belong to.
What It Means to Be a Child of God
One statement in this chapter caught me off guard.
“Every human being was created by God, but not everyone is a child of God.”
At first, I was confused.
If God created everyone, how could everyone not be His child?
As I continued reading, I learned that we enter the human family through physical birth, but we enter God’s family through spiritual birth.
That brought back memories from my own journey.
Storytime: When Faith Became Personal
I have actually been baptized twice.
The first time happened shortly after I moved into my home after being homeless.
At the time, baptism felt like something I was supposed to do.
It felt more like checking a box.
If I’m being honest, I didn’t really understand it.
I didn’t feel much of anything.
The second time was completely different.
This time, I wanted it.
I understood what it meant.
I felt it deep in my heart.
Looking back, I realize my relationship with God’s Word followed a similar path.
When Avery first came into my life, I talked about God because I wanted to impress him.
I would mention God.
I would talk about faith.
But the truth is, I didn’t really know Scripture for myself.
When I started attending church and Bible study, I often felt lost.
People quoted verses.
They understood lessons.
They seemed so confident in their faith.
Meanwhile, I was trying to keep up.
Then God opened my eyes.
I realized I was doing it for Avery instead of doing it for myself.
Everything changed when my relationship with God became personal.
Now I read because I want to know God.
Now I ask questions because I want understanding.
Now I study because I want a relationship with Him.
Faith became real when it became mine.
God’s Riches Are More Than Money
One section of this chapter completely changed the way I think about the word riches.
For years, I thought God’s riches meant financial blessings.
A bigger house.
More money.
Less stress.
Maybe even becoming wealthy.
But God’s riches are so much deeper than that.
The Spiritual Riches God Gives His Children
God’s riches include:
- Grace
- Kindness
- Patience
- Wisdom
- Mercy
- Power
- Glory
The more I thought about it, the more I realized something.
I would rather have God’s wisdom than money.
I would rather have God’s peace than money.
I would rather have God’s mercy than money.
Money can solve some problems.
But God’s grace can change a life.
The Inheritance Waiting for God’s Family
Another highlight listed five promises waiting for God’s children:
- We will be with God forever.
- We will be completely changed to be like Christ.
- We will be free from pain, death, and suffering.
- We will be rewarded and given responsibilities.
- We will share in Christ’s glory.
Reading those promises filled me with hope.
Life is not always easy.
We all face struggles.
We all face disappointment.
We all face seasons that challenge our faith.
But God has prepared something far greater for those who belong to Him.
As believers, our story does not end here.
Jesus Calls Us Family
One of my favorite highlights from today’s chapter said:
“Jesus is not ashamed to call them His brothers and sisters.”
That statement nearly brought tears to my eyes.
Jesus isn’t ashamed of us.
Even when we fail.
Even when we make mistakes.
Even when we feel unworthy.
He still calls us family.
What a beautiful reminder that we are loved, chosen, and never forgotten.
How Can We Treat Other Believers Like Family?
The question at the end of today’s chapter was:
“How can I start treating other believers like members of my own family?”
As I reflected on that question, I immediately thought about my old church.
Even though Avery and I no longer attend there, many of those people still treat us like family.
The pastor still speaks to Avery when he sees him.
Church members still wave.
They still check on us.
They still show kindness and love.
That is what God’s family should look like.
We may not attend the same church.
We may not agree on everything.
But we can still love one another.
We can still encourage one another.
We can still pray for one another.
We can still treat each other like brothers and sisters in Christ.
And honestly, that’s something I want to do better.
A Motivational Quote
“The family of God is not built on perfection. It is built on grace, love, and a shared faith in Jesus Christ.”
Question for My Readers
Today’s question isn’t just for me.
It’s for you too.
How can you start treating other believers like members of your own family?
Could you show more patience?
More kindness?
More forgiveness?
Could you encourage someone today?
Could you pray for someone who is struggling?
Because if we are all part of God’s family, then maybe it’s time we start treating each other like it.
A Moment of Reflection
Today’s chapter reminded me that belonging is one of the greatest gifts God gives us.
No matter where we’ve been.
No matter what mistakes we’ve made.
No matter how broken we feel.
God still calls us His children.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for choosing me and making me part of Your family. Help me to love others the way You love me. Teach me to show grace, kindness, patience, and forgiveness to those around me. Help me remember that every believer is my brother or sister in Christ. Thank You for never giving up on me and for always calling me Your child.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
My story isn’t perfect, but it’s real and I’m still standing, still growing, and still becoming.
One Last Thought Before You Go
Life is full of chapters we don’t always understand while we’re living them. But I’m learning that sometimes the most powerful stories come from the moments we thought would break us.
And if there’s one thing I’ve realized, it’s this: every season of life has a lesson waiting inside of it.
So here’s something I want you to think about today:
What is one moment in your life that changed the way you see yourself?
I would love to hear your story in the comments. Your experience might be the encouragement someone else needs today.
And if this message spoke to you, make sure you come back tomorrow… because I’ll be sharing another chapter of “The Untold Truth.”
Until next time,
