Sometimes the Truth We’re Searching for Has Been Waiting on Us All Along

There are stories we tell the world… and then there are the untold chapters. This is one of mine.

Good afternoon, my beautiful readers. Welcome back to The Untold Chapter.

Today honestly felt sweet… emotional… but peaceful at the same time.

A couple of days ago, I told y’all that I wanted to write a part two about family secrets because every family has them. Some families hide pain. Some hide truth. Some hide stories that should’ve been told a long time ago.

And today?

Life got real again.

The DNA Test That Could Change Everything

This morning I received an email from AncestryDNA saying they officially received my DNA sample.

Y’all… my heart dropped.

Not because I was scared exactly… but because this moment suddenly became real.

This DNA test is honestly bigger than just science to me.

It’s deeper than saliva in a tube.
Deeper than percentages on a screen.
Deeper than names connected through bloodlines.

This test represents years of wondering.

Years of silence.
Years of confusion.
Years of trying to understand why certain things in my life never fully added up.

As a child, you trust what you’re told. You believe the stories your family gives you because that’s all you know. But sometimes as you get older, life starts revealing little cracks in those stories. Small moments. Certain comments. The way people act. The secrets nobody wants to talk about openly.

And eventually those questions begin to grow louder inside of you.

That’s where I am right now.

Waiting.
Wondering.
Trying to prepare myself emotionally for whatever these results may reveal.

Because what happens when a test changes the story you believed your entire life?

What happens when the truth finally shows up at your front door after years of silence?

That’s heavy.

And honestly, I think people underestimate how emotional something like this can be.

Family Secrets Have a Way of Living in Silence

One thing I’ve learned is that family secrets don’t just disappear because nobody talks about them.

They live quietly inside people.

They show up in broken relationships.
In confusion.
In identity struggles.
In emotional distance.
In pain passed down from one generation to another.

Sometimes families keep secrets because they are ashamed. Sometimes they hide things to protect themselves. And sometimes they hide things because they think the truth will destroy the family.

But silence can destroy people too.

That’s the part nobody talks about enough.

The silence leaves people trying to piece together their own story without having all the pages.

And maybe that’s why this moment feels so emotional for me because I’m finally trying to read the missing chapters of my own life.

Storytime: Sitting in the Library Thinking About Life

Today is May 12th, and me and Avery decided to take the kids to the Warren Community Center.

And honestly?
That moment meant more to me than people probably realize.

My son and daughter got their very first library cards today.

That made my heart smile.

While they were in the gym playing basketball, I found myself sitting quietly in the library reading my book. I’m currently on my seventh book now, and that alone makes me proud of myself because a year ago I never thought I’d fall in love with reading the way I have now.

As I sat there reading and writing this blog, my mind kept drifting back to those DNA results.

A million thoughts.
A million questions.

Who am I really connected to?
Where do I come from?
What truths have been hidden?
What if everything I thought I knew changes?

There were moments in my life where I questioned things quietly to myself.

Certain feelings I could never explain.
Moments where I wondered why things felt distant.
Why some conversations always felt avoided.
Why certain truths felt hidden under layers and layers of silence.

And now here I am at 36 years old waiting on a DNA test that could possibly answer questions I’ve carried in my heart for years.

That’s emotional.

But I’m proud of myself for being brave enough to search for answers instead of continuing to run from them.

Because healing sometimes requires courage.

And maybe this journey is not just about discovering who my father is…

Maybe it’s also about discovering myself more deeply too.

The Truth Will Not Break Me

What I’ve learned during this emotional healing journey is this:

The truth cannot destroy who God already created me to be.

Whether Ricky is my father or not…
whether secrets come out or stay hidden…
whether answers bring comfort or pain…

I’m still Shannon.
I’m still growing.
I’m still healing.
I’m still becoming.

And honestly?

That matters more than anything.

Because identity is bigger than bloodlines.

Identity is about your heart.
Your growth.
Your character.
Your faith.
Your ability to keep moving forward even when life feels uncertain.

The beautiful thing about growth is learning that your identity cannot fully be defined by other people’s secrets.

Not your mother’s silence.
Not your father’s absence.
Not hidden truths.
Not family confusion.

At the end of the day, I know who I’ve become.

I’m a mother.
A wife.
A reader.
A writer.
A woman rebuilding herself chapter by chapter.

And while these results may reveal where I come from…
they still will not define where I’m going.

A Verse That Spoke to Me Today

“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” — John 8:32

That verse hit differently today.

Because sometimes freedom begins the moment we stop being afraid of what we might discover.

Motivational Quote

“Some truths hurt before they heal, but healing can never begin without honesty.”

A Question for My Readers

Have you ever discovered something about your family that changed the way you saw yourself?

I would love to hear your story in the comments because sometimes healing begins when we realize we are not alone.

A Moment of Reflection

God, today I pray for peace while I wait for answers. Help me not to fear the truth, but to trust You through every emotion that comes with it. Remind me that my identity is not built on confusion, secrets, or pain   it is built on the person You created me to be. Amen.

My story isn’t perfect, but it’s real and I’m still standing, still growing, and still becoming.

One Last Thought Before You Go

Life is full of chapters we don’t always understand while we’re living them. But I’m learning that sometimes the most powerful stories come from the moments we thought would break us.

And if there’s one thing I’ve realized, it’s this: every season of life has a lesson waiting inside of it.

So here’s something I want you to think about today:
What is one moment in your life that changed the way you see yourself?

I would love to hear your story in the comments. Your experience might be the encouragement someone else needs today.

And if this message spoke to you, make sure you come back tomorrow… because I’ll be sharing another chapter of “The Untold Truth.”

Until next time
