The Girl in the Mirror: Learning to See Myself Again

There are stories we tell the world… and then there are the untold chapters. This is one of mine.

Today I want to share something very personal with you all. Sometimes writing a poem is not just about creativity it’s about survival, reflection, and truth. I wrote this poem because I realized something powerful the other day when I looked in the mirror. I didn’t just see a face looking back at me. I saw a woman who had survived so many chapters of life.

For years I carried different versions of myself. There was the girl who was hurt by people she trusted. The girl who tried to hold families together even when it broke her. The girl who questioned her worth because of things she went through growing up and as an adult. And sometimes, if I’m being honest, there were moments when I didn’t recognize the woman I was becoming.

But healing has a quiet way of changing you.

It happens slowly. Sometimes through prayer. Sometimes through tears. Sometimes through the courage to let go of people, places, and pain that once defined you.

When I wrote this poem, it came from that moment of realization. The moment when you finally understand that the battles you survived did not destroy you they built you. They shaped you into someone stronger, wiser, and more self-aware.

For me, that moment was standing in front of the mirror and realizing that the woman looking back was no longer the same girl who once doubted herself.

She was someone new.

Someone healed.

Someone free.

And that’s where this poem was born.

My Poem

The Girl in the Mirror

I’m not the girl I used to be,
That version no longer lives in me.
I look in the mirror and finally see
A woman becoming who she’s meant to be.

I love every scar, every smile on my face,
The dimples that shine when the sun finds their place.
I whisper to her, “Did I get it right this time?”
And she answers back, “Yes… now watch yourself shine.”

The battles I fought, the tears that I cried,
The nights I felt broken, the pain deep inside
They’re nothing compared to the victory won,
Now my healing and freedom have finally begun.

No more tears, no more cries,
I lift my head and reach the skies.
I touch my hair and softly say,
“I’m proud of the woman I am today.”

I’m the girl I always dreamed I’d be,
No pretending, no searching for identity.
So deep, so kind, so strong, so smart,
A quiet fire burning inside my heart.

I tried for years to piece me together,
Wondering which version would last forever.
But now I know what I must do
Forgive the past and walk in truth.

Because Shannon stands here, bold and free,
Setting the standards for who I’ll be.
It wasn’t easy, the road was long,
But every struggle made me strong.

Now when I look, I clearly see
A different woman staring back at me.
Beautiful, growing, rising higher,
No longer lost in doubt or fire.

Sunflowers bloom and daisies grow,
Just like the strength I didn’t know.
The world may roar, the storms may be loud,
But I stand tall, unbroken and proud.

Don’t you see the victory in me?
At last… at last… I am finally free. 🌻

Why This Poem Matters

This poem is more than words on a page. It is a reminder that healing is real. That growth is possible. That the woman you become after pain can be stronger than the girl you once were.

I wrote this poem for myself but also for anyone who has ever looked in the mirror and wondered if they were enough.

You are.

And one day, just like me, you will look at your reflection and see the victory standing right in front of you.

What I Learned

Sometimes the greatest healing moment is simply recognizing the woman you have become. When you forgive your past, embrace your scars, and choose to keep growing, you begin to see yourself the way God always saw you strong, worthy, and beautifully made.

My story isn’t perfect, but it’s real I’m still standing, still growing, and still becoming.

Bible Verse

“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.” — Proverbs 31:25
